this month dave put out three amazing web clips. Its a weird age we're living in, with over-saturation of video content on skate site desensitizing our long term memory and making it almost impossible to keep up with all the ripping that's going on all over the world. There used to be a natural filter that made sure the skateboard fan only saw the best stuff, that being the only available media outlets that were available: skate videos produced by companies and video magazines. Now, anything goes and there needs to be some new kind of filter that helps us watch only the best. With that being said, last week dave abair put out 3 rad video parts for his different sponsor/flowships. First, a full part on the strangenotes site for independent. This part is honestly what I would call thrilling, skating every nitty and gritty spot he can find all over san francisco.

The next part that came out a few days later was another SF shredding part for paradise wheels

China 2010

While Kyle, Patrik and I were in China, we met up with the Converse squad which consisted of kenny anderson, eli reed, angel ramirez, sammy baca, julian davidson, ethan fowler, dave huang, anthony claravall, sam mcguire and a number of other heads. Kenny A hyped up the crew to hit the Great Wall of China at Sunrise, which seemed unnecessary when thinking about it the night before. The great wall was roughly a three hour drive away from Beijing and getting up at 4 to see some wall didn't sound too appealing. But fortunately we did and it was honestly one of the most amazing experiences of my life. We had to sneak up the mountain in darkness to get there, because it hadn't technically opened yet. When we got up there, it was one of the most incredible sights I've ever seen. Being the only humans on that wall as far as we could see was a feeling I'll never forget. Despite it being completely freezing, watching the sun cruise up over mongolia was epic! On the way down we discovered a cool slide you could take all the way down, which fully topped the whole experience.

At some point during october of last year, I told Josh he should come down to SD and escape the cold wet winter in Seattle to film for his welcome to organika video. I told him not to worry about anything, that'd he'd have a place to stay on my couch for as many months as he wanted. Well a week or so before his arrival Hank, Kelly and I received a 30 day notice of eviction. Josh was a trooper though and came down anyways, helped us move and found a home on the couch of the apartment that Hank moved into. I felt like an asshole and just left the country, but I knew Josh would handle business and kill it while i was gone. This Welcome to Organika video is long overdue, but at least its here. Josh is one of the best skateboarders out there and I've wanted him to get on Organika for a long time. Here is some many minutes of footage he stacked while he was down here, as well as some clips from up in his home state of Washington. Enjoy

Bangkok and Beijing Leftovers

While I was out in Asia a few months back, Patrik and I pretty much tried to film something at every spot. Whether it was something new or just something whatever, we wanted to document all the amazing spots that are out there, many which are untouched by western skateboarders. Patrik and I were listening to this nina simone remix song a bunch while we were out there, so I asked him to edit together all the leftover stuff that isn't going in my next organika project. Poo Screen and the super bowl flip

Packers won. I think they won. I can't say I watched more than one play of the game tho, so if anyone is going to be talking about what happened in a historic football game, don't ever let it be me. But i did take tons of photos which you can view here. Poo Screen also landed a few epic flatground tricks on danny wallace's cruiser board and I think his switch hardflip created the loudest reaction from the crowd at John and Danny's party than any moment in the football game. Its not surprising tho. What do you expect when you get a bunch of skateboarders together to sit and watch a football game? Here's some video of what you get...

The Fisherman

Sometimes when the skater asks a filmer to film him navigate a difficult line of on board rolling and off board running, a filmer will show a great deal of apprehension and reluctance. Patrik Wallner, "the fisherman," is not one of these filmers. He takes every request, as challenging as they may be. While filming this line in Bangkok, at a fools gold spot that looks like it has much more potential than it actually has, Patrik somehow made it work, despite a slight slip due to the combination of water and the marble surface. I have already tried and failed to make this spot work, so this day I figured I'd try and document the difficult task that Patrik had in front of him. Fortunately, in the end, there was success.

I call Patrik the fisherman because he and michael mackrodt, the other star of this short film, have been making a series of short video parts that Patrik calls "fishing lines." To watch them, click the links below

It was hard for all of us to decide on who should have the last part in the video. Originally the video was going to be a promo for David Cole and he was going to have first and last part. Then we thought Ryan Harris should have last part, because the whole SHUFFL thing was his deal originally and his footy was looking epic. I think at the last second we decided to give it to Austin because he’s just a G and his footy was super raw.
Austin started kicking it with us when he moved from Pittsburgh to be a student at San Diego State. He immediately got along with all of us and by Ryan’s approval he was officially SHUFFL material. Austin is one of the most gifted skaters I’ve ever seen and when he skates he puts off a sort of Cardiel vibe that’s contagiously positive and motivating when you’re out skating. So much of this part was done on the whim and with gracious ease, which is why his part ended up being so deserving of the last part. Watch out for Austin in the future because he’s going to blow minds. Also, check his part that just came out on the Axion site.—Walker Ryan

If it wasn’t for Ryan Harris, there never would have been any SHUFFL video. The acronym SHUFFL was created by some of Ryan’s OG skate homies and Ryan started repping it down in San Diego. Somehow it caught on and after awhile we decided to make a homie video. Since SHUFFL stands for Skate Homies Underground Family For Life, it seemed fitting to call the video The SHUFFL Video.
Ryan’s part came together easily because the dude is always busting his ass and always filming. He’s spontaneous and never seems to walk away from any session without getting an amazing clip or two, with a trick he’s probably never even tried before. The only dilemma for this part was finding a song. We tossed around ideas for months and nothing seemed just right. Ryan had his heart set on Money For Nothing by Dire Straights, but Ivery wasn’t down. The night before the premiere we still had no Ryan part and so I started piecing together his part to his original song choice. By 6a.m., Ivery had finished what I started and his video part was starting to come together. In the end, the finished product came out perfect in my opinion.
Ryan’s the ideal ATV shredder and will skate any and everything in his path. Look out for Ryan because he’s on the come up and you’ll surely see more of him in the future.—Walker Ryan

I met Paul when I was 17 at Tampa Am. He immediately struck me as a very thoughtful and genuine person, unlike most of the crazy young lads running around that contest, and he had the dopest front crooks I’d ever seen! It was no surprise that when I moved to San Diego a year later we became good friends and it was equally unsurprising that he was already great friends with everyone in San Diego that I was meeting throughout that first year. Paul busts his ass on and off his skateboard with whatever he’s doing, which explains why it was so easy for him to get through San Diego State with an Economics degree while never ceasing to push himself and progress on a skateboard.
Paul was able to bounce around quite a bit throughout the period of time we were filming, which is why his part stands out so strong. Even though the majority of this video was filmed in San Diego, it is nice to see a mix of East Coast spots in there as well, especially coming from a San Diego native. Paul really helped make this video happen and was determined to get it out there no matter the cost. Whether it was tracking down footage of every last homey who we wanted in the video, to helping get sponsorship money, Paul wasn’t going to let anything get in the way of putting this video out. Paul’s part came out great and despite having a full time job putting together concert stages he’s still out everyday skating hard and enjoying his deep love for skateboarding.—Walker Ryan

It’s a miracle we were even able to complete this video because for the most part, there was no filmer who filmed more than 30-percent of the video. This video was composed of donated clips from generous filmers from all over. Ivery Turner was definitely our filmer, but he had a full-time job for most of the year and it was hard to always have him out skating. The rest of it somehow came together by tracking down all the random tricks we’d get when we’d be out skating with a large array of different talented filmers. I don’t know what to say about David Cole. I met the dude was I was 13 because we were from the same town, but at the time I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how I’d never skated with him before that. It wasn’t like we lived in a big town and there definitely wasn’t any ripping skate scene. But this dude was hucking himself off the hugest sets with the steeziest finesse of any 12-year old I’ve seen to date. Today, the steeze has only gotten better, the skills have improved, and I’ve come to find that David is one of the rarest breeds of human beings I will ever encounter. I still can’t quite figure him out and I’m not sure if anyone ever will. That’s why we call him Crave.

Originally, Crave was supposed to have first and last part and the video was supposed to be his sponsor me tape. While filming, David was working full time at Panera Bread manning the sandwich line while suffering from one serious injury after the next. David broke his elbow super bad and didn’t go to the doctor for over a month due to lack of health insurance. When he finally went, they told him his forearm was basically close to falling off if he didn’t immediately get an eight-inch bolt drilled into his bone to connect his elbow to his arm.

Crave’s back to full strength and can be spotted shredding the St. Helena park in the town he now resides in while working at a burger joint called Gott’s Refresher. I still know David is going to be a legend in skateboarding, whether he ever gets sponsored or not. To this day he’s one of my favorite skateboarders to watch and as anyone who’s met him can testify, he’s the best person in the world to be around. Tom Remillard’s part came together at pretty much the last second. I’d received a call from Tom a few months before we started editing the video and he had asked if he could have his unused footy go towards our video. After talking for a minute, we decided he should just go ahead and have a full part. Tom Grom’s been hanging out with all of us for as long as I’ve been down in San Diego and it was only appropriate he had a full part. But by the time we were almost done editing the video, we barely had any of Tom’s footage! Some how in the last week or two we were able to track down every random, lingering trick Tom’s filmed over the last year or so and by some stroke of luck he ended up having a full part! Ivery and Tom put together this masterpiece the night before the premiere and I can honestly say it’s one of my favorite parts in the vid. I wanted his part to show the transformation from the infamous grom to the grown man destroyer! He’s one of my favorite skaters and this part shows why, but wait until you watch him in person, it’s a whole other experience!—Walker Ryan

Dave Abair started hanging out with us a few years back and would periodically sleep on the floor/couch of this skate house that John, David, Andy, and Ryan lived in down in San Diego. It’s almost impossible not to love the dude because his kind-hearted, genuine personality just pours out the moment you meet him and you immediately get the sense that he’s one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Dave is also one of the hardest working skateboarders in the industry, despite being what Low Card once called an “unsponsored am.” Dave currently lives in Oakland, California, works a graveyard shift at a dog kennel in San Francisco during the night, and is ready to skate the moment he gets off work—at 8 a.m. I don’t know how he does it, but he manages to get so much skating done every week.
Dave’s part was a blast to put together because he had at least 20 minutes of cool unique footage to sift through. So instead of having the footage just barely fit together, I tried to look for the most character out of the very best clips to compile a fully representative Dave Abair part. I’m proud Dave came through for our video and I might have to say that his is my favorite part in the video. Somebody please give this dude the green light and turn him into a “sponsored” am because it’s long overdue.—Walker Ryan

When I moved down to San Diego for college 5 years ago, John Lupfer was the first San Diegan I skated with. We were instant homies and for the first year I was in San Diego John would pick me up nearly every day to take me street skating. With out John I probably would have been stuck at UCSD that first year, friendless and completely disconnected from any type of skate community. Almost every dude in this video who is from San Diego was introduced to me through knowing John and he really helped make this whole video come together.

John’s part was looking mighty throwaway about a month before we put out the video. John had been holding on for dear life to about to 2 minutes ofamazing footy for the Stereo Video and was refusing to give us any of it. For months we begged but John refused to budge. Ivery and I were just about ready to hijack it all and put it in his SHUFFL part before he decided to give it to us with a clear conscience. This is by far John’s best video part to date and we were hyped one of San Diego’s finest, a true skate homie to many, could start off the video with a banging part. And the song couldn’t have been more perfectly chosen. John is the best!

Josh Anderson, who is good ol Northwestern SHUFFL affiliate, has been lurking in California for about a month now, ripping his socks off. I told him to get a one way ticket so he could stay on my couch as long as he wanted ! 2 weeks later kelly, hank and i got evicted and we failed to get another apartment together. Josh was a good sport and helped us move and despite leaving him homeless, he remains in san diego to continue his thrashing excursions. So David Cole lives in Angwin California. Its a small town in the napa valley. He recently was forced to relocate from my couch in San Diego due to a lack of a job, lack of funds and some injuries which may have increased his desire to rage and not skate as much as he could have. Since DC came to SD the boy i grew up with known as david became the man San Diego knows as Dave who then became the maniac some now know as Crave.

Since his relocation back to the napa valley David/Dave/Crave has been on it! He's mellowed out, he's got a job, and he skates everyday. David is also always a blast to hang out with !

I decided to show up at his house and film what he does on a daily basis since he's been back home. This is what i put together.

I thought i was just going to get a 3 minute montage of skating, his hill bomb, and everything in between, but what i ended up putting together was a little bit more. Here's part one of three.

John's also a huge gangstarr fan, and even though koston already used this song back in the day, i had to put his skating to a couple verses from "now youre mine."

Jake is one of the first skate homies i met when i came to san diego four years ago. He was working at utility and shredding his brains out every time he had a day off. Now he's the assistant team manager for volcom and getting the full time job hasn't slowed down his skating abilities. On the contrary, i'm pretty sure they've improved his skills. When i asked jake for some tricks for the montage, he send me a whole part worth of footy. Here all of it is, including the bangers that closed out the homie montage in the video. Jake is a true SHUFFL affiliate and he may be one of the gnarliest TM's in the biz.

THE PEARL PREMIERE IN REVIEW

For the most part, the jump off premiere was almost an utter failure. We made a deal with the hotel that we would get enough people in the place to meet a $4,000 minimum in bar sales. We also agreed to rent 10 of the 23 rooms in the hotel. On top of that, we promised them that we as skateboarders wouldn't get too crazy and that no more than 160 people would show up, since that number is the capacity of the bar and the pool.

The video was supposed to play at 8pm, and they were to shut down the bar around 11pm. Pearl hotel is a classy establishment, and i think they were expecting a classy crowd. By 7pm, every inch of the hotel was packed with grimey skateboarders drinking their own beers and smoking cigarettes everywhere they're not supposed to. my guess would be that 350 or more people were packed in the bar and pool area. Surprisingly, for a skate event, a good percentage of the attendees were lovely ladies. People were jumping off the banisters into the pool, sneaking into the hotel through the kitchen and getting progressively more wasted as the minutes counted down to 8pm.

Meanwhile, I was busy exporting the video in my car driving back from ivery's house where we'd been editing the video for the previous 48 hours, with no breaks. I get to the hotel and the place is gnarly. So many homies showed up i was almost moved to the point of tears, but i was far too overwhelmed to sit and get sentimental. I still had to burn the dvd!

So i'm in my room, burning the dvd, feeling like i'm on cloud 9. It was 7:45, the video was being burned, the hotel put on a trailers loop of all the web videos we've been putting on the blog, and the crowd was getting hyped. The hotel manager told me he was getting nervous and he wanted to play the video to keep the crowd controlled, and i assured him we were on schedule.

With 7 minutes left on the IDVD countdown, the worst thing imaginable happens. My computer completely freezes. With 7 minutes left, the burning program that comes with the macbook pro decides it can't complete the process. We diagnose the problem, which was due to having far too many applications up and running at the same time, along with a completely maxed out hard drive. Both of which i hadn't taken the time to check before beginning the process, which to my deep remorse could have taken me a total of 30 seconds.

After i shut down all the programs, delete an entire music folder, and retry the burning, i hear a knock on my hotel door. Its the manager, and he tells me that the hotel is getting its ass kicked and unless i have the dvd ready to play that moment, he's pulling the plug, calling the cops, and kicking out the entire party.

fuck.

I explain the situation and tell him itll just be a few more minutes, but he apologies and says there's nothing he can do. The party's over.

So there i am, in my room, watching the dvd countdown the minutes until the video is completed as the cops are storming the hotel kicking every single person out. The bar gets shut down so we can't meet the $4000 minimum, the video hasn't even been played, and as far as i know there’s tons of drunk skateboarders outside getting arrested.

once the place gets cleared out, the dvd completes the burning process. I have the dvd in my hands while the whole party is kicked out of the premiere! I tell the manager its ready to play and he runs to put the video in.

This is when the magic happens. Somehow, once the video starts playing, people just start appearing in cheers, as if from thin air. People run in from all unguarded entrances, through the kitchen, over the fences and around the back. Herds of people stumble out of the ten hotel rooms, and as the john's video starts playing i hear loud cheers and look back at a packed bar and a full upper banister of homies.

After the video played, the manger called the cops once again and San Diego's finest cleared out the masses.

in retrospect, The SHUFFL premiere happened exactly the way it should. Skate homies showed up from far and wide to watch a homie video, the cops kicked us out and the higher authority tried to stop the fun, but in the end we got to do what we wanted to do anyways. Sounds much like what we do every time we go skate. Almost an utter failure, with a solid victory in the end.
